Iowa ’s Child Passenger Safety Law

What type of seat does my child under 1 year need to ride in?

Children under 1 year and less then 20 pounds must ride in a rear facing child restraint system.

What does that mean—if they are 15 months and weigh 18 pounds can they graduate to a forward facing child safety seat?

No! Your child must meet both criteria, 1 year and 20 pounds, to ride in a forward facing child safety seat.

My child is 5 years old, does he still need to be in a child safety seat?

Yes. Children from ages 1 to 6 need to be in an appropriate child restraint system. This means either a child safety seat or booster seat.

My child is 7 years old does she still have to use a seat belt in the back seat?

Yes, children from 6 years but under 11 need to be in either a child restraint system, safety belt or harness.

How do I make a decision regarding the type of child safety seat or booster seat to use with so many choices?

You will want to check the national recommendations for the type of seat best suited for your child’s weight and height.

Always remember that you must use the child restraint system (child safety seat, booster seat, harness or adult belt in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
